２つのWheaton College

U.S.A.に同姓同名の有名なLiberal Arts CollegeがIllinoisとMassachusettsにある。どちらもWheaton Collegeという。

どちらもTop RankのLiberal Arts CollegeでIllinoisのLiberal Arts CollegeはChristian系のEvangelical College、そしてMassachusettsにあるWheaton Collegeはどの宗教にも属さない普通の非宗教系Liberal Arts Collegeである。場所もMassachusettsとIllinoisということで全然別。経営も全然別。

ところが両方全く同じWheaton Collegeという名前である為によく人は間違えて誤解を生じている。

その昔MassachusettsのWheaton Collegeの卒業式に招かれたGuest SpeakerがIllinoisのWheaton Collegeのことについてしゃべり出して大変な顰蹙をかったことがある。Speech Writerが間違ってIllinoisのWheaton Collegeのことについて話題を盛り込んだものをそのGuest Speakerが読んだせいである。

ところが今日起こった事件はもっと深刻だ。

IllinoisのWheaton CollegeでCollege始まって以来初めての黒人の女性のProfessorがTenureをもらった。それ自体大してNewsになる話でもないのだが、この黒人のProfessorのLarycia HawkinsがFacebookで例のSan BernardinoのTerrorist Attackの直後に

「I stand in religious solidarity with Muslims because they, like me, a Christian, are people of the book. 

And as Pope Francis stated last week, we worship the same God」

と書いたことが切っ掛けになり、全米から非難が殺到し、ついにこのIllinoisのWheaton Collegeの理事会がTenureを与えたばかりの黒人のProfessorを首にする手続きに入ったというNewsが流れたので、またもやこれが大騒ぎになり表現の自由と信仰の自由に違反すると、これまた非難が殺到した。

ところがその非難が殺到する先が何と全く関係のないMassachusettsのWheaton Collegeに殺到したものだから、MassachusettsのWheaton Collegeが頭を抱えてしまった。LetterやらSNSやらSocial MediaやらFacebookやらで、MassachusettsのWheaton Collegeに対して全米から非難が殺到したのである。

そこでついにMassachusettsのWheaton Collegeの学長が全米主要誌に「全然違う学校だ。IllinoisのWheaton Collegeで起こったことを全く違う学校のたまたま名前が同じというMassachusettsのWheaton Collegeと混同しないでくれ」という投稿をした。

「I serve as the president of Wheaton College in Norton, Mass. My college shares a name with another college in Illinois. Although we are completely unaffiliated, and there is a rather significant cultural difference, people still confuse us from time to time.

My Wheaton is a secular liberal-arts college; the other Wheaton is an evangelical Christian school. Though both schools have been around for more than 100 years, we are very different institutions, separated by half a continent but connected by a name and occasionally by careless Googling.」

ことごと左様に、名前が同じということはこういう騒動の時には混同を招く。特に今のようなNet社会ではその傾向が加速する。
